Ankony Farms Sale Report, September, 27th, 2018, Clarkesville, GA
On a beautiful Autumn day, an overflow crowd gathered at the historic and scenic Ankony Farms, Clarkesville, GA. As always, Virgil Lovell and crew offered the finest in hospitality, facilities, and cattle. The sale grossed $2,609,250 on 84 lots for an average of $31,063 – a record in the state of Georgia. Visitors remarked about the depth of the offering. Many stated that it was one of the finest offerings of Angus cattle that they had ever witnessed.
Prior to the sale, a seminar titled the “Future of Angus Gentics,” focused on selecting Angus cattle for profitability. Dr. Dale Woerner, the recently appointed Cargill Chair at Texas Tech, spoke about the critical importance of achieving CAB or Prime marbling levels to satisfy consumers. He emphasized the “dramatic” improvement in eating quality that occurs as cattle move from low Choice into CAB and Prime. Then, a distinguished panel discussed their use of the $Profit index:
Rob Thomas, from Thomas Angus in Baker City, OR
Donnell Brown, from R. A. Brown Ranch in Throckmorton, TX
Leland Leachman, from Leachman Cattle of Colorado in Fort Collins, CO
The panelists discussed how their commercial bull customers wanted all of the traits that $Profit delivers. They also spoke about some of the short comings of $Beef and its terminal emphasis.
